Cathedral of Lugo

The project for the current Lugo Cathedral dates back to the year 1129. Since its inception, the cathedral has undergone numerous reforms and expansions spanning the medieval, modern, and neoclassical eras. Its completion is considered marked by the construction of the towers on the western facade in 1880. The result is a harmonious architectural ensemble that reflects diverse styles and periods, both in its structure and internal decorative elements. Situated adjacent to the Roman wall, the building seamlessly blends Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical styles. Internally, it stands out for its elongated and narrow floor plan—a distinctive feature among Spanish cathedrals. Notable spaces include the Baroque chapel of the "Virgin of the Big Eyes," the main altar (conceptually Baroque but with strong classical influences in its elements), the Renaissance altarpiece, and the choir.
