López Campos highlights the relevance of Galician audiovisual competitions in showcasing filmmaker Julio Medem's star at the Cans Film Festival.

Culture, Language, and Youth Councilor José López Campos visited the Cans Film Festival today during the final day of its 23rd edition to participate in the star-placing ceremony with which the festival honors Donostiarra filmmaker Julio Medem. The event, which has been taking place since May 19 in the village of Porriño, Pontevedra, concludes tonight with its awards ceremony after offering an extensive and varied program of short films in the competitive section, as well as music, exhibitions, and discussions.The head of Culture for the Xunta congratulated the management of the Cans Film Festival for having successfully reached the end of another year of development and participation with an event so unique "for its unapologetic rural character" and for the "excellent popular involvement it attracts as an added value to film exhibition." He also praised the joint role that the festivals of the Galician professional circuit play in the advancement of the audiovisual sector and recalled, in this regard, the contribution of the Xunta de Galicia to making them possible through a specific line of grants of which Cans is a beneficiary.>At an event where he was accompanied by the Director of the Galician Agency for Cultural Industries, Jacobo Sutil, López Campos personally congratulated Julio Medem for achieving his star on the Cans Green, a recognition that was also granted yesterday to Galician filmmaker of Basque origin Jaione Camborda. 

The 2026 Cans Festival concluded after an official competition of 13 fiction and animation short films, which featured 10 premieres, alongside 11 entries in the non-fiction category. The selected works addressed themes such as the environment, mental health, gender-based violence, memory, depopulation, identity, and the LGTBI+ universe, with styles ranging from social drama to animation, horror, black comedy, and hybrid narratives. Works by Anxos Fazáns, Alejandro Gándara, Ariadna Silva, Bea Lema, Guillermo de Oliveira, Virginia Curiá, Diana Toucedo, Fon Cortizo, Hugo Amoedo, and Andrea Zapata are some of those that represented Galician audiovisual production in this year's programming.
