San Francisco's cemetery (Ourense)

Add to my bookmark list

A romantic cemetery graces the upper part of the city, nestled at the foot of Montealegre and connected to the ancient convent of San Francisco. Built in 1834, a secular cemetery was added in a small annex in 1887. Its allure lies in the beauty and grandeur of its graves, crafted by artists such as Piñeiro, Víctor Macho, Faílde, and others associated with the iconic Malingre foundry. Equally compelling are its occupants, as it is the resting place for eminent figures from literature, the arts, and philosophy. In the year 2000, it was recognized as a Cultural Heritage site.
