This archaeological and historical museum is housed in an ancient fortress built in the 16th century. From the 16th to the 18th centuries, it served as a defensive structure and prison. Later, it was used as a lazaretto to isolate sailors arriving in the city affected by infectious diseases. The museum, in its current form, was inaugurated in 1968. Designated as a historical-artistic monument since 1949, it has held the status of Cultural Heritage since 1994.
