The Cathedral Basilica of the Asunción, designated a National Monument in 1902, began construction in 1219. Later, the transept and sacristy were added, in the Gothic style. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the ambulatory was opened to create more space, and the side aisles were extended. In the 18th century, a significant modification to the facade was implemented involving the construction of two towers, each with three levels and topped with domes. Additional sections were added to each side of the transept, resulting in a temple that blends various architectural styles. With a rectangular shape, it features three aisles, a transept, a main chapel, a rectangular ambulatory, and a cloister. Constructed with granite masonry, it is topped with slate.
