  • The Teatro Principal of Santiago will host on Tuesday 28th an open show of the residency being developed by the Galician actor Avelino González and the Irish Caitriona Ní Dhomhnaill, in collaboration with the artistic director of the National Theater of Wales, Steffan Donelly.
  • The Xunta's company is working with national theaters in Irish and Welsh in an upcoming joint show, in parallel to the European Phōnē project to promote minority languages through the performing arts.

The Centro Dramático Galego and the national theaters in Irish (Fíbín - An Taibhdhearc) and Welsh (Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru) are laying the creative foundations for the future co-production of the show Vai en ven, Teacht Agus Imeacht, Dod Ac Mynd, in a collaboration that is born in parallel to the European project Phōnē for the enhancement of minority languages through the performing arts. To this end, Vigo and Santiago de Compostela host these days two of the artistic residencies of this creation, in charge of the Galician actor Avelino González and the Irish Caitriona Ní Dhomhnaill, with the support of Steffan Donnelly, artistic director of the Welsh Theatr Genedlaethol.

The Teatro Principal of Santiago will be the stage next Tuesday 28th, at 20.00 h., of an exhibition open to the public of this process. Admission is free until full capacity is reached, in the same way as the one that will be offered today at the Nautilus Cultural Center of Santo André de Comesaña, in Vigo.

This gives continuity to the work started during the stay that took place between November 10 and 19 in Ireland and was shown at the headquarters of Taibhdhearc in Galway in the context of Ceangal, a meeting that brings together professionals from Ireland, Scotland and Wales who work around the theater in Celtic languages from different artistic and academic fields. On this occasion, the initiative was opened to Galicia through the exhibition of this work in progress and the participation of Fran Núñez, director of the Centro Dramático Galego, who shared with the attendees the different actions that the Galician public company is developing under the umbrella of the Phōnē project.

Aspiration of Xeración Nós

This exchange is, in turn, a new step forward in the process of internationalization of Galician theater through the theatrical production unit of the Xunta, which allows to weave cultural ties with entities promoting Celtic cultures and recover, in this sense, the ancient aspiration of the Xeración Nós to connect with Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Brittany.

In parallel, work is progressing under the umbrella of the European project Phōnē, leadership by the Xunta de Galicia together with nine international partners with the aim of contributing to the safeguarding of cultural and linguistic diversity in Europe, connecting people through theater. The initiative, in which the Consellería de Cultura, Educación, FP y Universidades participates in a transversal way through its departments of Linguistic Policy, Culture and Cultural Industries, with special prominence of the Centro Dramático, is the first major international collaboration of public and private theaters working for minority languages, which expects to result in more than 170 cultural actions linked to the theatrical world.

Within this framework, the Galician institutional company is producing the production with which it will commemorate its 40th anniversary in 2024 and for which it has the dramaturgy of Xacio Baño and Tamara Canosa, under the artistic direction of the latter.

Likewise, Rafael Rey directs a community show for the Galician band in collaboration with the Galician Federation of Amateur Theater (Fegatea) and with the support of the General Directorate of Culture. As part of the activities of the Phōnē, last week he had the opportunity to participate in a meeting held in London together with the rest of the stage managers of the associated theaters with which the international staging that will see the light in 2024 is being built.
