Ons Island

Add to my bookmark list

The Ons archipelago, situated off the Pontevedra estuary, comprises two islands: Ons, the larger and still inhabited, and Onza, smaller and designated as a reserve. The coastline features gently sloping cliffs and numerous 'furnas,' such as the Buraco do Inferno, as well as sandy stretches, particularly on the east coast, where Melide Beach and dunes stand out. A distinctive feature of Ons is its surrounding rocky platform, which creates shallow yet thriving underwater environments. Beyond its natural allure, the island holds significance for its ethnographic and cultural heritage, having housed a substantial population adapting to life amidst the sea.
